A Garden-Inspired Wedding at The Cambridge Mill

For this wedding our couple wanted subtle and romantic decor to highlight the features of the beautiful space selected for their venue.

The ceremony was held in a pavillion-styled chapel at Cambridge Mill, with wrap-around windows that incorporate the beautiful outdoor surroundings as a picture-perfect backdrop.

The couples’ reception was held in the Falls Room at the Cambridge Mill - a space that combines the old-world feeling of exposed stonework, a double-sided fireplace and hand-carved beams with modern elements such as modern lighting fixtures and the solarium with spectacular views of the Grand River.

A king’s table was set for the bridal party in front of a beautiful stone fireplace. Lush garland with delicate white roses were laid down the centre, surrounded by tapered and floating candles. The table was finished with a watercolour print of Cambridge Mill.

The light greenery with candles was carried through to guest tables. As a personal touch, the tables were named after places the couple had visited together, with watercolours of those locations painted by the matron of honour. Some of the locations included Hyde Park, Blarney Castle, Dunn’s River Falls and even Harry Potter Studio.

Stationary was custom-designed by the Blue Hummingbird, drawing inspiration from both the couple and the venue. Their monogram was inspired by their passion for fitness, using elements from the silhouette of a free weight barbell. The couple also wanted to include a maple leaf and shamrock to represent the combining of their Canadian and Irish identities. The underlay used textures found at the historic venue.

Some of the couples’ favourite things include CrossFit, doughnuts, and a good competitive game night. These things were woven into elements of their wedding.

Fashion, Food, And Philippines: Halo Halo Holiday Pop-up

This past holiday season we had the pleasure of providing Cambio Market and Merienda Filipino Snack Bar with our design and decor services for their Halo Halo Holiday Pop Up - Toronto's first-ever fair-trade fashion pop-up and Filipino fusion snack bar (You may have heard about it on blogTO or ABS-CBN)!

Portland Market provided us with a great intimate space complete with white walls and natural light, giving us endless options when it came to creating the perfect atmosphere for this holiday market. There's even a large, beautiful tree out front that we were able to hang a welcome sign we designed and printed for the market!

Cambio Market and Merienda Filipino Snack Bar approached us to create a full and emersive experience, which reflected a tropical-chic vibe, brining in elements from the Philippines. This included beautiful pastel colours, tropical flowers, lush greenery and lot of lights!

We wanted to create a strong sense of the event and its partners, with strategic placement of branding, ideal for recognition and social media photo ops.

We designed event signage which encapsulated the sought after vibe, in soft shades of coral pink, mint green and purple (similar to Pantone Ultra Violet). This was used in various locations, including this large scale wall decal paired with an eye-catching tropical wreath made up of natural wood material, banana leaves, orchids and anthuriums.

The windows were draped with lush garland which included tropical palms, Italian ruscus, orchids and anthiriums. Fairy lights were added to the garland adding the perfect amount of twinkle. These babies were especially stunning when the sun set!

We forgoed the evergreeen Christmas tree and opted for a festive white birch, more fitting of the space. To decorate the tree, we used Gold geometric ornaments filled with Sampaguita flowers (national flower of the Philipeans), and pastel purple ornaments that we topped with green miniature palms, beconing the shilohette of a miniature pineapple.

The second room was turned into an educational and dining space, where attendees could dig into the delicious fare prepared by Merienda, while learning about the wonderful artisans partnered with Cambio Market. The room featured large photos we printed of the artisans and their products, as well as reading materials on the history of various Filipino textiles and weaving techniques.

The window was wrapped with more tropical garland, and tables were topped with pastel coloured pineapples.

Winter Wedding Inspiration - From Our Table to Yours

We get great joy from entertaining our family and friends, and this past Thanksgiving we were fortunate enough to host over fifty guests. We created a rich and elegant table setting that also provided an inviting atmosphere.  We hope this will serve as some inspiration for your wedding day or your next big event!

There are so many ways to create a beautiful table setting that will be memorable for both you and your guests. We paired these lovely white, hand-painted charger plates with mismatched ivory & gold vintage china dinner plates.

Our custom-designed menu cards were topped with a beautiful hand-tied rose, adding an extra layer of decadence, fitting for the season.

These diamond cut, pewter goblets paired with gold rimmed wine glasses were the perfect addition to our table.

The rich shades of burgundy and magenta blooms in the floral arrangements brought some warmth to our guests during this chilly season. Contrasting blue goblets and candles provided a bright pop of colour complementary to flowers.

We think it's fair to say that no dinner is complete without dessert! Decadent doughnuts from Glory Hole Doughnuts, scrumptious cookies and cupcakes from Bake375, and creamy lemon cheese cake from Nadège made this vintage dessert cart all the sweeter!

An Art-Deco Inspired Wedding at One King West Hotel

Often times we meet couples that are very busy with their careers and day-to-day lives, with little time to dedicate to the time-consuming task of planning a wedding. This was the case for Nadia and Don, two busy professionals in Toronto.

Nadia and Don came to the Blue Hummingbird seeking full planning and design services for their winter wedding. Through consultation they expressed their desire for a day that was romantic and glamorous.  Combined with their selected venue of One King West – a 1914 Beaux Arts gem nestled in the heart of the city – we knew that we could evoke this feeling with a theme inspired by the era of 1920’s, using Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco elements.

For us details mean everything! So, from the Art Nouveau-inspired invitations to the custom-designed Art Deco poster and head table backdrop, we sought to transport guests to this bygone era.

We created an intimate atmosphere with dimmed lighting and candlelight, accompanied by delicate floral elements by Enchanting Flowers.

We combined the groom's love of hockey  with the bride's love of cake, using some of his favourite hockey players and her favourite dessert as a unique way to display the table numbers. Beautiful calligraphy on glass done by Paula Lee Calligraphy.

It was a lot of fun designing the art work for this wedding - particularly this large scale poster of the couple. Smaller postcards were created for guests to take home. Menu cards were personalized for each guest, which added a personal touch.

The One King West Grand Banking Hall is just that - Grand! We created a head table to draw guests' eyes to the couple of the night. The Blue Hummingbird custom-designed an opulent ivory and gold backdrop, complete with the couple's monogram. One thing we love to do for members of a bridal party is having their partners seated with them. We were able to accommodate this with a u-shaped head table, draped with lush garland and flooded soft candlelight. To make this table extra special, each chair was adorned with delicate strings of pearls.

Guests were greeted by the warm flicker of candlelight as they entered the Grand Banking Hall, along with selections of Jazz from the bride and groom's personal collection. Oversized balloons with gold and ivory tassels filled the late night food station area. And of course, no party is complete without a rockin' dance floor! Guests danced into the early hours of the morning to the sounds of D'Enforcas.

The Masterpiece - NYE

Drawing inspiration from the Andy Warhol Revisited exhibition in Toronto, Patrick and Amanda of The Blue Hummingbird (TBH) came together with Windup Restaurant to create a New Years Eve event.

An experience that engaged all of the senses, The Masterpiece transcended the ordinary by bringing together a feast for the eyes, ears and taste buds!

TBH custom designed pop art images of cultural icons - from the late, great David Bowie, to a Hotline-blinging-Drake to a Canadian favourite, Michael J. Fox (a.k.a. Marty McFly).

To help guests find their "inner-Warhol", TBH went beyond the adult coloring book trend and created an adult colouring wall, which also doubled as a photo booth backdrop.

Dance and music complimented the manifestation of The Masterpiece, combining a classical presentation by Ballerina True Skalde en pointe, with modern sounds provided by DJ’s Champion Sound and Mel Man.

Staying true the theme, Chef Bryan Birch created a special menu for the event, which included:

  • Fish n’ chips - an ode to the UK, the birthplace of pop art
  • Mini whopper sliders – Have you ever seen Warhol eat a Whooper?
  • A variety of Windup’s crowd pleasers

40, Fabulous and the CITY

We can't lie.. We LOVE a good party theme! So when the birthday girl told us her favourite city is NYC, it was obvious we had to celebrate her milestone by bringing a little bit of the Big Apple to Toronto. The Blue Hummingbird incorporated some New York flair into the party. We re-created some of her favs from her go-to spots, like Cuban corn from Cafe Habana, cheesecake from Junior's, and delightful signature cocktails from 230 Fifth. We also custom designed NYC-inspired signage and a step and repeat (photo backdrop). It surely was 40, fabulous and the City!

Hop on the King: The Streetcar Party

Blue Hummingbird wanted to throw a summer event that was different. Something that was a reflection of the quintessential Torontonian experience: The streetcar. Classic Toronto.

Blue Hummingbird turned the streetcar into a moving party. We didn't just hand out tokens and throw a bunch of people onto the TTC. We chartered a vintage PCC streetcar. There was food, a New Orleans - inspired band and non-stop dancing!

Photos were taken by party goers throughout the night. It was a great way to capture the experience. At Blue Hummingbird there's no such thing as ordinary - This party was the epitome of extraordinary!
